Post From the parent of an asperger’s child, now 21, who was adopted at age five. Our child was diagnosed at age five. God bless the therapist who asked the right questions Is she sensitive to smells? Our child would smell literally every spoon full of food, every book we read, everything she touched had to be smelled before we could move on with it.
Is she sensitive to rough textures? She would not wear jeans until she was 18 years old. Even today, will not wear a regular pair of shoes — only soft slip ons. Also would not sleep between sheets — only on a bare mattress with a blanket.

Clinical experience has identified that the majority of such adolescents and young adults would like a romantic relationship. However, there is remarkably little research examining this aspect of autism spectrum disorders ASDs or strategies to facilitate successful relationships. Typical children do this naturally and have practised relationship skills with family members and friends for many years before applying these abilities to achieve a successful romantic relationship.
They also can have an extreme sensitivity to particular sensory experiences. To achieve a successful relationship, a person also needs to understand and respect him- or herself. His requests for a date had been consistently rejected. Then a very popular and attractive girl in his class suggested the two of them go for a date at the cinema. He was so happy and the date was progressing well, when the girl became embarrassed and confessed that she asked to go out with him only to complete a dare from her friends.
Love and affection People with an autism spectrum disorder have difficulties understanding and expressing emotions, and an emotion that is particularly confusing to people with ASD is love. A child or an adult with ASD may not seek the same depth and frequency of expressions of love through acts of affection, or realize that an expression of affection is expected in a particular situation and would be enjoyed by the other person.
Someone with an ASD also may be conspicuously immature in his or her expressions of affection, and sometimes may perceive these expressions of affection as aversive experiences. For example, a hug may be perceived as an uncomfortable squeeze that restricts movement. The person can become confused or overwhelmed when expected to demonstrate and enjoy relatively modest expressions of affection. The program soon will be evaluated in a research study conducted by the University of Queensland in Australia.

Anyway, read that post before you read this one, because I reference Emma a bunch of times with minimal context. That anthropomorphic blue puzzle piece they like to coat the world with every April? Know who is less likely to have either disposable income or health insurance that covers autism services? You see where this is going. Once you get past a page and a half of results about Temple Grandin and, like, two posts about Carly Fleischmann, Google offers you TWO hits — both from international news wires.
One is about an autistic woman who was raped and murdered in Peru in , which I could rant about for a whole separate post. Autism is never the issue. Straight white affluent male fucking entitlement is the issue. Read that last sentence in every way it is intended. Straight white affluent male fucking entitlement, of course, fucks people up. It even fucks up the men to whom it ostensibly applies. Female attention is not guaranteed.

Then it becomes clear her mood has altered, startlingly. Susan Boyle was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome only last year, she is pictured here on Santa Monica Beach, California Direct questions from her own people are met with a glare, to the point that food is ordered for her. Helping each other enjoy life and relationships on the spectrum. Saturday, May 26, The Hidden Autistics – Asperger’s in Adults Recently I encountered a problem while collaborating with a group therapist with whom I share a patient. My patient has progressed quickly in therapy, as do many adults on the spectrum. However he did not start off as stereotypically autistic. In fact, initially he presented as many of my patients do: Typical posture, gait and gesturing.
It took a few sessions to realize this fine gentleman suffered mightly with the symtoms of Asperger Syndrome, which he kept well managed and thoroughly hidden. Contrary to the stereotyoes of adults on the spectrum, my patient displayed no “meltdown” behavior, was keenly TOO keenly aware of people’s reactions to him and exhibited no bizarre special interests or encyclopedic knowledge of vaccuum models.
In fact, “Joe”, as we’ll call him, socialized quite well. He seemed quietly confident and wry, intelligent and perceptive. People responded well to him, really liked him, though probably none of them would describe him as a close friend. No one realized – in fact he often went without realizing – that his baseline anxiety approached panic on a regular basis. As soon as he was out of bed, existential angst was his constant companion.
His difficulty managing his thoughts made rudimentary conversations minefields to be navigated.
